1 Brief Introduction to Academic Events
The participants will be divided into five groups according to their majors and research fields.
Each group will attend two lectures given by experts in their research areas.
(2) Academic Exchanges
a) Four sessions for five groups will be organized in parallel. Each student is required to give an oral report of around 15 minutes.
b) Academic discussions will be held among professors of relevant laboratories at BUAA and the participants.

(4) Team Competition
This summer school aims to introduce science and technology frontiers of aeronautics and astronautics to the participants. The organizing committee of the summer school will put forward a frontier problem for each group (this time the problem for each group is the same), and members of the group will be divided into teams to do research and write a research report, on which experts will comment. Several distinguished teams will win the Best Team Award.

3 Introduction to Experts Invited
Dr. Lei Wang is the director of the BRICS Cooperation Center, director of the Center for Belt & Road Studies at the China Institute of Education Policy, associate professor of School of Government at Beijing Normal University.
He got his PhD. in diplomacy studies from Fudan University in 2012, and studied at Free University of Berlin as program PhD. student from 2010 to 2011. He conducted his postdoctoral research at Fudan University from 2013 to 2016, and transferred to Beijing Normal University in 2016. In addition, he worked in the Chinese Ministry of Commerce from 2013 to 2014, and participated in the preparatory group of the BRICS New Development Bank in 2015.
He focuses his research on BRICS cooperation and global governance, and has published around 30 academic papers in both English and Chinese journals. He provides policy consultations to several miniseries of the central government frequently.
lDr. Nauman Aslam
Dr. Nauman Aslam is the reader and leader of "Future Network and Mobile Computing" group in the Department of Computer Science and Digital Technologies, Northumbria University, UK.
Dr. Nauman received his PhD in Engineering Mathematics from Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada in 2008. He was awarded Master of Engineering Degree in Internetworking from Dalhousie University in 2003; and BSc in Mechanical Engineering from University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore, Pakistan in 1993. Prior to joining Northumbria University he worked as an Assistant Professor at Dalhousie University, Canada from 2008 - 2011. Currently, he also holds an adjunct assistant professor position at Dalhousie university.
Dr. Nauman has extensive research experience in wireless and sensor networks. Currently he is leading a team to set up a research facility for developing wireless sensor based health care applications. He has held research supports from industry including CMC Microsystems Canada and federal funding organizations including ACOA/AIF.

In February 2013, he obtained a doctorate in engineering from the Institute of Semiconductor and Display of the National Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Gyeonggi University, Korea. In June of the same year, he became an associate professor of Airways, Technology (mainly for inertial measurement and magnetic field measurement), micro-nano sensor chip technology research work, China Instrument Society sensor branch director, IEEE Journal of Biomedical and Health Informatics (Q1) guest editor, Sens. Actuators B (Q1), Biosens (Q1), Sensors (Q1), IEEE Sensors (Q2) and other journal reviewers; H factor of 8; apply for more than 10 national invention patents, which has authorized 8 national invention patents.
lDr. Xavier Ottavy
After his PhD thesis in Fluid Mechanics (Turbomachines) at the Ecole Centrale de Lyon, Xavier Ottavy has been working as a Research Associate at the Cambridge University in the Whittle Lab, with Rolls Royce supports. At the end of year 2000, he got his permanent researcher position at CNRS (Centre National pour la Recherche Scientifique) and joined the Turbomachinery Department of the LMFA (Laboratoire de Mécanique des Fluides et d’Acoustique), where he is working on the unsteadiness and instabilities in compressors. For its studies he uses low speed experimental test cases but also high–speed tests rigs with realistic machines which need powers of several MegaWatts. In 2009, he became the supervisor of the CREATE Project (based on the 2MW test rig ECL-B2 with an high-speed multistage axial compressor from Snecma), and in 2011 he started the project PHARE-2 (based on the 3MW test rig ECL-B3 dedicated to UHBR fans research in aerodynamics, aeroelasticity and acoustics fields). Its projects are then based on experimental studies with some metrology and CFD developments, and are achieved with a strong connection with the industrials (especially with SAFRAN Group). Since 2016 he is the head of the Turbomachinery Department of the LMFA.
lDr. Damir Valiev
Dr. Damir Valievobtained his PhD from the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Sweden, in 2008. Subsequently, he held postdoc positions at Umeå University, Sweden, and at Princeton University, USA, also working as a long-term visitor at Sandia National Laboratories, Livermore, USA. Since 2014 he works as a senior research engineer at the Department of Applied Physics and Electronics, Umeå University, Sweden. In 2016, he joins the Center for Combustion Energy and the Department of Thermal Engineering at Tsinghua University, as an associate professor. He is a recipient of Thousand Young Talents Plan award. He has published more than 20 papers in peer-reviewed journals, including Combustion and Flame, J Fluid Mech, Phys Rev Lett, Phys Rev E. His research interests include modelling and numerical simulation of combustion, high performance computing, dynamics of premixed flames, deflagration-to-detonation transition.
lDr. Ting Li
Dr. Ting Liis an Associate Professor at the Department of Thermal Engineering, Beihang University. He completed his MS and Ph.D in Aerospace Engineering from the Ohio State University in 2012 and 2014. His research interests include high-pressure weakly ionized plasmas, plasma assisted combustion, advanced laser diagnostics and high efficiency boiling heat transfer.
lDr. Arun K. Misra
Dr. Arun K. Misrais the Thomas Workman Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. His research interests lie in the areas of satellite dynamics and control, large space structures, space robotics, and fluid- structure interaction. Dr. Misra is a Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) as well as a Fellow of the American Astronautical Society (AAS). He has been elected to the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA) and to the Canadian Academy of Engineering. He is a Co-Editor of the journal Acta Astronautica.
lDr. Mengping Zhu
Dr. Zhu received her PhD degree from School of Astronautics at Beihang University in 2013 and then joined Qian Xuesen Laboratory of Space Technology. Currently, she is a senior engineer in the laboratory and has participated in the research and development of many projects. Her research focuses are related to next-generation space systems, space debris removal techniques, and deep space explorations, especially the dynamics & control problems therein. She is a key member of the on-orbit service research team, which has made great contribution to the establishment of the On-orbit Service and Maintenance National Science and Technology Major Project. During the feasibility analysis stage of the project, she was in charge of the control subsystem design and collected rich experiences in relative motion dynamics & control, collision dynamics during the capture process between the servicing spacecraft and the object spacecraft, as well as parameter identification and control of combined spacecraft. She also participated in the whole designing work of the general capture, locking, release and separation mechanisms for defunct GEO spacecraft and the research of cooperativization of non-cooperative space targets using multiple micro-nano satellites. She also proposed a novel debris capture concept which using biomimetic viscoelastic material. The feasibility of the method has now been fully analyzed and demonstrated by correlative simulations and tests.
lDr. Rui Zhong
Dr. Rui Zhongreceived his Ph.D. degree in spacecraft design from Beihang University, Beijing, China in 2011. From 2011 to 2013, he worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Earth and Space Science and Engineering at York University, Toronto, Canada. He joined the School of Astronautics at Beihang University as an Assistant Professor in 2013, and he has been an Associate Professor since 2016. His research interests include tethered satellite system, spatial multi flexible body dynamics, spacecraft dynamics and control.
lProf. Ramesh K. Agarwal
Prof. Ramesh K. Agarwalis the William Palm Professor of Engineering in the department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science at Washington University in St. Louis. From 1994 to 2001, he was the Sam Bloomfield Distinguished Professor and Executive Director of the National Institute for Aviation Research at Wichita State University in Kansas. From 1978 to 1994, he was the Program Director and McDonnell Douglas Fellow at McDonnell Douglas Research Laboratories in St. Louis. Dr. Agarwal received Ph.D in Aeronautical Sciences from Stanford University in 1975, M.S. in Aeronautical Engineering from the University of Minnesota in 1969 and B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, India in 1968. Over a period of 40 years, Professor Agarwal has worked in various areas of Computational Science and Engineering - Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), Computational Acoustics and Electromagnetics, and Multidisciplinary Design and Optimization. He is the author and coauthor of over 600 publications. He has given many plenary, keynote and invited lectures at various national and international conferences worldwide in over sixty countries. He has received many prestigious honors and national/international awards from various professional societies and organizations for his research contributions including the AIAA Reeds Aeronautics Award, SAE Medal of Honor and Honorary Fellowship from Royal Aeronautical Society. He is a Fellow of AIAA, ASME and IEEE and Chinese Society of Aeronautics and Astronautics.
lDr. Xiaoqian Sun
Dr. Xiaoqian Sun is an Associate Professor with the School of Electronic and Information Engineering at Beihang University since April 2015. She obtained her Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering from German Aerospace Center/Technical University of Hamburg in 2012. From 2012 to 2015, she worked as a postdoc in German Aerospace Center, Hamburg. She received her M.S. and B.S. degrees in Control Theory and Electronical Engineering from Northwestern Polytechnical University in Xi’an, China. Her research interests mainly include air transportation networks, multi-modal transportation, and resilience of complex networks. She also won two best paper awards (CICTP2016 and ICRAT2014).
lDr. Leiting Dong
Dr Leiting Dong is a Professor with School of Aeronautic Science and Engineering at Beihang University since December 2015. He obtained his Ph.D in University of California in Irvine in 2013, majoring in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. From 2013 to 2015, he worked as an assistant specialist in University of California. His research interests mainly include fatigue and damage tolerance of airframe structures, macromechanics and Micromechanics of composite materials and structures, high-performance structural modeling methods. He won ICCES Young Investigator Award in 2017, Thousand Young Talents of China in 2015 and CMES Outstanding Young Author Award in 2015.

Dr. Boyd Panton earned a PhD in Mechanical Engineering under the supervision of Prof. Norman Zhou at the Centre for Advanced Materials Joining, University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. His previous experience includes being a Research Engineer at both the University of Waterloo and the advanced materials corporation Smarter Alloys Inc., where he worked on projects in the energy, consumer, automotive and medical industries. He is the former CTO for LabsCubed a start-up company focused on rapid material characterization to speed up material development cycles. He is the current CTO at Executive Solutions Worldwide Corp., a company focused on bringing cutting edge manufacturing and construction technologies to developing nations to improve their standard of living. He is starting employment at Baylis Medical Inc. as a Staff Process Engineer where he will develop new production lines and advise the R&D team on design for manufacturing.

Associate Professor at Tsinghua University
Dr. Lei Liu holds a position in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Tsinghua University, Beijing, China. Dr. Lei LIU, received his B.S., M.S. and PhD degrees from State Key Lab of Advanced Welding Production Technology, Harbin Institute of Technology in 2005, 2007, and 2011 respectively. He was also a visiting scholar (2008-2011) and Postdoctoral Fellow (2011-2012) at the University of Waterloo.
Dr. Liu led 5 projects for over 3 million RMB in total. He published more than 50 journal papers in the field of micro/nano-joining - a cutting edge technology for device manufacturing with bottom-up strategy, being cited over 300 times, including Advanced Functional Materials (cover paper), Applied Physics Letters (editor’s pick)、Acta Materialia、Scripta Materialia etc. Currently Dr. Lei Liu is interested in femotosecond laser micro/nano processing of nanomaterials for device applications, such as DNA detector, memristor, etc.
lDr. Andrew Pequegnat
Sr. Laser Engineer at Memry Corporation
Dr. Andrew Pequegnat graduated from the University of Waterloo with Ph.D, he is a core member of the Smart alloys Corporation for laser processing of shape memory alloys. He worked in Baylis Medical Company Inc. as a laser engineer.
Currently Dr. Andrew Pequegnat is the Sr. Laser Engineer of Memry Corporation, Bethel, Connecticut, United States- a world leader in medical and industrial applications requiring nitinol alloys and complex manufacturing processes. He is specialized in ultrafast laser processing of NiTi Shape Memory Alloy (nitinol) and other materials for medical applications.
